Immediate Post-Operative Care
Control Bleeding
- Bite gently on the gauze pad placed over the surgical area for 30–45 minutes.
- If bleeding continues, replace the gauze and bite firmly for another 30 minutes.
- Avoid spitting, rinsing, or using a straw for the first 24 hours to prevent dislodging the blood clot.
Manage Swelling
- Apply an ice pack to the outside of your cheek intermittently (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) for the first 24–48 hours.
- After 48 hours, switch to warm compresses to alleviate swelling and jaw stiffness.
Pain Management
- Take prescribed pain medications as directed.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can also help manage discomfort.
- Avoid aspirin, as it may increase bleeding.
Dietary Guidelines
- Stick to soft foods for the first few days: yogurt, mashed potatoes, applesauce, and smoothies (without a straw).
- Avoid hot, spicy, crunchy, or hard foods that may irritate the surgical site.
- Gradually reintroduce solid foods as you heal and feel comfortable.
Rest and Activity
- Limit physical activity for at least 48–72 hours post-surgery.
- Keep your head elevated while resting to minimize swelling.
- Avoid strenuous activities that could disrupt the healing process.
Oral Hygiene
- Do not rinse your mouth or brush your teeth for the first 24 hours.
- After 24 hours, gently rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) several times a day, especially after meals.
- Resume brushing your teeth gently, avoiding the surgical area.
