Use It or Lose It: Book Your Dental Visit Before Your 2026 Insurance Benefits Reset

Smiling patient in a dental chair with text Use Your 2026 Dental Benefits before many plans reset Dec 31, Dental Enhanced Las Vegas

The last few months of the year go fast. Between work, school events, and the holidays, it is easy to forget that your dental benefits may be on a clock. For many plans, that clock runs out on December 31.

If you have dental insurance, using your dental benefits before year end is one of the easiest ways to get value from the coverage you already pay for. Now is a smart time to look at what you have used this year and what is still sitting on the table. If you do not have insurance, there is a simple option for you too, and we cover it below.

At Dental Enhanced on Warm Springs in Las Vegas, we see the same thing every fall: patients call in December hoping for an opening, and the calendar is often already full. Here is how to get ahead of it.

The Short Answer

  • Many dental plans run on a calendar year and reset on December 31. Some run on a different plan year, so check your own plan.
  • Unused benefits usually do not roll over. That includes the annual maximum and, on many plans, your preventive visits for the year.
  • Your deductible may already be met if you had care earlier in 2026, which can make finishing treatment now more affordable than waiting until January.
  • December fills up fast. Booking in October or November gives you the most choice of days and times.
  • No insurance? Our in-house Dental Discount Plan is $350 per year for the first person and $250 for each additional person.

How Dental Benefits Usually Work

Most dental insurance plans have a few moving parts. Exact terms vary from plan to plan, so think of this as a general guide, not a promise about your coverage.

Annual maximum

Your annual maximum is the most your plan will pay toward care during the plan year. On many plans, whatever you do not use by the end of the year simply goes away. It generally does not carry over into 2027.

Deductible

The deductible is the amount you pay out of pocket before your plan starts sharing costs on certain services. If you already had a filling, crown, or other treatment this year, you may have met your 2026 deductible. When the plan year resets, the deductible usually starts over too.

Preventive visits

Many plans include two exams and two cleanings per year, often with X-rays at set intervals. If you have only had one visit in 2026, or none, those visits usually do not roll forward. Using them now keeps your mouth healthy and catches small problems early.

Why Booking Early Matters

Every year, the last few weeks before the holidays are the busiest stretch on our schedule. Patients who wait until December often find limited times left, especially for longer visits.

Booking in October or November gives you:

  • More choice of days and times, Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM
  • Room to schedule a follow-up visit before December 31 if treatment needs more than one appointment
  • Time to get a written estimate and check your benefits before you decide
  • Less holiday-season stress

Finish Treatment You Already Started

If we recommended treatment earlier this year and you have not scheduled it yet, the end of the year is a good time to revisit it. That might be a filling, a porcelain crown, or the next step in a larger plan.

A few reasons to finish now:

  • Small problems tend to grow. A cavity that needs a simple filling today can need more work later.
  • Your deductible may already be met for 2026.
  • Benefits you have left this year may help with part of the cost. We can check your benefits and give you a written estimate before you commit, so there are no surprises.

Coverage depends on your specific plan, and we never want to guess. Call us and our team will help you understand what your plan shows before your visit.

If your plan is larger, such as dental implants, ask us how timing across two plan years might work for you. We offer a free implant consultation to talk it through.

What About Cosmetic Care?

Insurance often treats cosmetic care like teeth whitening differently from preventive or restorative care, so it is usually not covered. Still, a year-end checkup and cleaning is a great first step if you are thinking about a brighter smile for the new year. A healthy mouth is the best starting point. Read more in our guide to whitening before veneers.

If straighter teeth are on your list, ask about ClearCorrect clear aligners, which come with a free consultation.

  3. Look at pending treatment. Is anything left from a past visit?
  4. Call early. Book in October or November for the best choice of times.
  5. No insurance? Ask about the Dental Discount Plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all dental plans reset on December 31?

No. Many plans follow the calendar year, but some use a different plan year. Your plan documents or your insurance company can tell you your reset date, and our team is happy to help you check.

Do unused dental benefits roll over?

On most plans, no. Unused annual maximum and unused preventive visits usually do not carry into the next year. A small number of plans offer rollover features, so check your plan.

Will my insurance cover my treatment?

That depends on your plan. We will check your benefits and give you a written estimate before treatment, so you know what to expect.

I do not have insurance. Can I still come in before the end of the year?

Yes. You are welcome as a self-pay patient, or you can join our Dental Discount Plan for $350 per year (first person) and $250 for each additional person, which includes all needed X-rays, 2 exams, 2 cleanings, and 30% off other treatment.

How soon should I book?

As soon as you can. October and November have the most openings. December tends to fill up first.
